...They come from the sea...

The SFI military Submariners are created using original modern timepieces, re-styled to pay a respectful homage to the historical military watches of the past such as the Rolex 5517 issued to British SAS & SBS divers during the 1970s, then further enhanced to meet the exact needs of the modern day UKSF.

All watches offered by SFI have been designed in collaboration with a delegation of former members of the UK Special Forces, tested in the same conditions as the current modern UK Special Forces operate & are currently worn by former members of the UK Special Forces.

SFI military Submariners have been exclusively designed, tested & are worn by members of the UKSF. SFI are the official suppliers of modified military specification watches to former badged members of the UK Special Forces.

Important - Donations are made to UKSF charities along with the Princes Trust from the sale of SFI watches.

Modifications Explained

Modifications Explained

Each modification selected by our delegation of former UKSF members during the design process was specifically chosen to enhance the authenticity and/or function of the watches.

To understand the purpose of each of the new features please browse through the following pages

Special Forces Issue SC Dial Logo

Modifications Explained

SC - The Swimmer Canoeist

The initials 'SC' are derived from the term 'Swimmer Canoeist', a reference used as an early form of identification by one of the UK Special Forces most discreet units before they re branded in later years & received an official isiginia.

Today to qualify as a 'Swimmer Canoeist', candidates are put through an extensive training course.  The training includes: Extensive diving, parachuting, demolition, Infiltration of ships & platforms, canoeing, survival, beach reconnaissance & maritime counter-terrorism activities

The SFI SC01 & SC02 watches have adopted the initials 'SC' at the suggestion of the former UKSF members who helped to design the watches.

Special Forces Issue - Military grade DLC

Modifications Explained

The coating

The coating used on the SC01 has been exclusively developed for SPECIAL FORCES ISSSUE & tested by former members of the UKSF in the most hostile envionments. Although a form of Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating, our unique formula consists of a reduced level of carbon (which oftens softens the coating). As a result of the lower carbon levels, the coating is more of a gunmetal grey than black. The process of applying the coating take 7-10 days per watch, resulting in an infinately more durable timepiece.

The military grade coating used on the SFI SC01 is exclusive to SPECIAL FORCES ISSUE. It is the most durable coating of its type on the market & is not used on any other custom watch brands.

SFI Feature - The Date

Modifications Explained

The date

The date feature was selected for one simple reason 'morale'. During a long tour you always want to know when you are going home.

Vintage Rolex Military Fixed Bars

Modifications Explained

Military fixed bars

Military fixed bars are a key feature of military watches & have been used by many different brands when issuing military watches for decades.

Fixed bars are worn in conjunction with a NATO strap & prevent the watch becoming detached from the owner in the case of snagging during operations (Note- Fixed bars render the original factory bracelet redundant).

Rolex Milsub Sword Hands

Modifications Explained

Sword or Gladiator hands

Military Sword or Gladiator hands are a key feature of military watches & have been used by many different brands when issuing military watches for decades.

Military Swords hands are installed to increase the visibity as they are both larger in sixe than standard hands & contain more luminous compound.

The custom made Military sword hands fitted to our models SFI SC01 & SC02 are finished with a white superluminova which glows blue in the dark & underwater.

SFI - Vintage Rolex 5517 case

Modifications Explained

Satin case finish

Although it is not possible to make a watch completely anti reflective, limiting any potential glare which may compromise your position in the field is important.

By altering the case finish from polished to satin the extent of any reflection is reduced

The example in the image shows the satin finish on an original vintage Rolex Milsub from the 1970s (courtesy of www.theoldwatchshop.com). We have applied the same finish on the SFI SC01 and SC02

SFI - Military Rubber Bezel Insert

Modifications Explained

Rubber bezel Insert

The military insert with graduated 60 minute bezel insert (rather than the standard 15 minute bezel insert) to record greater elapsed time, is one of the enduring features of the original 1970s Rolex Military Submariner.

The SPECIAL FORCES ISSUE models SFI SC01 & SC02 both feature our own unqiue intepretation of the original.

The SFI military insert with graduated 60 minute bezel is Swiss made from hard rubber compound (to ensure a lower magnetic signature as required in the manned submersibles used by the SF) & finished with luminous (white to blue) enamel to ensure greater legibility underwater & at night.

SFI - Milsub engravings

Modifications Explained

Case back engravings

The example in the image shows the engravings on an original vintage Rolex Milsub Army issue from the 1970s (courtesy of www.Vintage-DB.com). We have applied a similar syle to the SPECIAL FORCES ISSUE models SFI SC01 and SC02 which include the model designation, military broad arrow & issue number/year of issue

SFI - Pelican case

Modifications Explained

The Package

  • Some parachute cord (this is for use by the UKSFs in particular environments such as the jungle, where the humidity makes the use of straps uncomfortable, so the wearer removes the strap, puts the watch in a shirt pocket and secures the watch on a the parachute cord by attaching it to the military fixed bar then wearing around their neck.
  • 4* NATO straps in black/grey/green/tan (Note our NATO straps have been extensively tested by UKSF operatives & have been selected as they provide the most durability possible.
